How it works
A word is any run of letters, digits, apostrophes or hyphens, which keeps 'self-esteem' and 'don't' as single words. Sentences are counted at terminal punctuation, and paragraphs at line breaks.
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average for adult silent reading of general prose, and speaking time assumes 140, a comfortable presentation pace. Those two figures are why a five-minute talk needs roughly 700 words, not 1,200.
Common questions
How many pages is 1,000 words?
About four double-spaced pages in 12pt, or two single-spaced.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted inside your browser — the page has no server to send it to.

A little over two minutes silently, or around three and a half minutes read aloud.
