How it works
The tip is calculated on the bill as printed. If your bill already includes a service charge, most people tip on top only for exceptional service, or not at all. Rounding up distributes the remainder across the group rather than leaving one person short.
Customs vary widely: tipping is expected and often essential to staff income in the United States, modest or rounded-up in much of Europe, and uncommon or built into the price in Japan and parts of Asia.
Common questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the stricter convention and the difference is usually small.
What is a standard tip?
In the United States, 18–20% for table service is typical. Elsewhere, rounding up or 5–10% is more common.
