Number to words

Cheques, contracts and invoices often require the amount in words as well as figures, because words are far harder to alter. Type the number and copy the sentence.

How to use the number to words

  1. Enter the number, including decimals if you need them.
  2. Choose plain words or cheque wording.
  3. Copy the result straight into your document.

How it works

The converter works in groups of three digits, naming thousands, millions, billions and trillions, and uses the British convention of inserting 'and' before the tens in each group — one hundred and five, rather than one hundred five.

Cheque mode writes the fractional part as a fraction over 100 and closes with 'only', which is the standard wording banks expect and which prevents anyone adding to the line afterwards.

Common questions

How do I write an amount on a cheque?

Use cheque mode, which produces the full wording including the fraction and the word 'only' at the end.

Does it handle very large numbers?

Up to the trillions. Beyond that it returns the grouped digits instead.
