How it works
Overall percentage is total marks obtained divided by total marks available, times one hundred. It is not the average of the subject percentages — those two only agree when every paper carries the same total, which is why a 50-mark practical and a 100-mark theory paper cannot simply be averaged.
Pakistani boards grade on percentage bands: A+ from 80, A from 70, B from 60, C from 50, D from 40 and E from 33. Divisions are wider — first division from 60%, second from 45%, third from 33%. Some boards apply different rules for practicals or for students taking additional subjects, so check your board's own gazette when the figure matters.
Common questions
How do I calculate percentage of marks?
Divide total marks obtained by total marks possible and multiply by 100. For 850 out of 1100 that is 850 ÷ 1100 × 100 = 77.27%.
What is first division in Pakistan?
60% or above. Second division is 45–59% and third is 33–44%, with 33% as the usual pass mark.
Is 1100 or 1200 total marks for matric?
Matric is normally out of 1100 and intermediate out of 1100 as well, though totals vary by board, stream and year. Enter your own totals rather than assuming.
