Fraction calculator

Enter two fractions, mixed numbers, decimals or whole numbers and pick an operation. The answer comes back simplified, along with its mixed-number, decimal and percentage forms.

How to use the fraction calculator

  1. Type the first value — 3/4, 2, 0.75 and 1 1/2 are all understood.
  2. Choose add, subtract, multiply or divide.
  3. Type the second value and read the simplified result.

How it works

Adding and subtracting requires a common denominator, so both fractions are converted onto the product of the two denominators before the numerators are combined. Multiplication is simpler — numerators together, denominators together — and division multiplies by the reciprocal of the second fraction, which is the formal version of 'flip and multiply'.

The result is then simplified by dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor, found with Euclid's algorithm. That is why 6/8 comes back as 3/4 and why the tool reports which factor it cancelled.

Common questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Convert both to a common denominator, add the numerators, then simplify. 3/4 + 5/6 becomes 18/24 + 20/24 = 38/24 = 19/12.

How do I divide fractions?

Multiply by the reciprocal — invert the second fraction and multiply. Dividing by 2/3 is the same as multiplying by 3/2.

Can I enter mixed numbers?

Yes. Write them with a space, like 1 1/2.
